Earlier this year, an Executive Order was signed by the President that will significantly impact how federal payments—including tax refunds and payments—are processed. Starting September 30, 2025, the federal government has been directed to discontinue issuing paper checks for tax refunds and other federal disbursements.
Additionally, all payments made to the government, including tax obligations, are expected to shift to electronic processing as soon as feasible.
What This Means for You
This move toward digital transactions is designed to improve efficiency, security, and speed. However, it also means individuals and businesses must prepare for the transition. Here are a few key considerations:
- Awaiting Further Guidance: More details are expected regarding how exceptions will be handled and what specific processes will be implemented.
- Secure Your Banking Info: Please confirm your bank account details with us through a secure channel to ensure seamless future transactions.
- Explore IRS Payment Options: Begin reviewing electronic payment methods available through the IRS to ease the transition once the mandate takes full effect.
Currently, EFTPS.gov is the go-to platform for scheduling electronic payments for businesses and individuals to the IRS. As of now there is a recorded voice message that individuals will not be able to create new enrollments for EFTPS after October 17th. Those individuals already enrolled can continue to use EFTPS but all others will be required to use IRS Online Account or IRS Direct Pay in order to make return payments. All individual taxpayers will be required to transition later in 2026. This applies to individuals only, not businesses.
